In 2009, students from Horn Lake Middle School, Horn Lake, MS, were challenged by teachers, Susan Powell and Melissa Swartz, to REMEMBER the children of the Holocaust. The “Pennies Project” was launched whereby the students would collect 1.5 million pennies for the 1.5 million children who perished.
Hearing about the campaign, Denise Turner, mom and teacher, asked if their students, Generation SC, a neighboring home-school group, could also REMEMBER the children of the Holocaust by helping collect pennies.
In 2014, with all pennies collected, the Unknown Child Foundation, Inc. was formed for the purpose of creating a memorial with the pennies to REMEMBER students who worked diligently to complete their challenge.
